NEW for November and just in time for the festive season, learn how to use a brush pen to write beautifully in calligraphy - at the inspiring Heritage Courtyard Studios in Wells, Somerset,

This calligraphy lesson is for complete beginners including those who have tried dip pen calligraphy before and want to build on their lettering skills.
In just two and a half hours you’ll learn how to write the upper and lowercase alphabet confidently and write joined-up words all in a beautiful modern calligraphy style.
You’ll learn lots of tricks along the way and put everything you’ve learn together to make your own festive gift tags and cards.
WHAT IS A CALLIGRAPHY BRUSH PEN?
The pen we’ll be using is a felt brush pen which is exactly that - a pen that works as a brush. It’s got a medium flexibility that’s perfect for beginners so we can achieve a contrast between those thick and thin strokes that gives modern calligraphy it’s appealing character.
Brush pens come in lots of different shapes and sizes that I’ll be bringing along so you can experiment with them too!
HOW IS BRUSH CALLIGRAPHY SIMILAR TO USING A DIP PEN?
If you’ve ever tried calligraphy with a dip pen and ink you’ll know that there’s a lot to be thinking about at the same time to get the pen and ink to work together in harmony. It’s definitely a process and worth every moment - although I’m biased!
The brush pen, you’ll be pleased to hear, is a lot more straight forward to get the hang of - as long as you start with the right pen. Imagine learning dip pen calligraphy with a really flexible nib, using any pot of ink and the back of an envelope - it’s not going to go well. It’s the same for using a brush pen, as the right tools really make a difference to getting started on the right foot and will determine whether you continue with confidence or not.
I’ll introduce you to a reliable brush pen and give you step by step live demonstrations so you follow the path to success - even if you’re left handed or consider yourself to have messy handwriting.
SOME BENEFITS OF USING A BRUSH PEN
There are lots of benefits of using a brush pen, one being that it’s quicker and more forgiving to learn than with a dip pen. Personally, it’s a great way to begin - it’s how I started after all! ABOUT THE BRUSH PEN CALLIGRAPHY CLASS

TIME: 10am - 12:30pm
WHERE: Heritage Courtyard Studios, Sadler Street, WELLS
At this relaxing calligraphy class you’ll learn how to use a brush pen to create beautiful hand lettering. You’ll practice making the basic strokes then use them to form letters and words in a modern calligraphy style, giving you a strong foundation to build on.
You’ll also get the chance to try out a range of different brush pens and make some festive gift tags and cards featuring your new-found lettering skills!
This class is a great introduction to modern calligraphy and perfect if you want to create your own stationery and hand-lettered home décor, or are looking for a creative and relaxing hobby.
Suitable for complete beginners and those needing a refresher. If you’ve tried using a dip pen and ink before then this class will add to your lettering skills and we’ll take a look at how you can adjust your lettering style too.
All materials and tea & coffee are included. You’ll get to take away your own pen and be emailed a PDF of the worksheets we use.
