Beautiful Wedding Place Cards
Calligraphy Place Card ideas and Inspiration for your Luxury Wedding
I’ve put together a showcase of hand calligraphy name place cards to give you some ideas about how your wedding tables could be decorated at your reception party or even rehearsal dinner.
I find paper is a wonderfully versatile material that’s deeply imbued with tradition, taking on a timeless quality when matched with calligraphy. All the paper I use is sustainably sourced and lovingly made, often using time-honoured methods to bring it into being.
Your personalised seating name cards can be matched with your wedding day stationery, such as table name cards and individual menu cards, giving your wedding a seamless and elegant look.
What is the purpose of wedding place cards?
Your wedding stationery and on the day details are designed to not only serve a practical purpose that helps you day run smoothly but to be treasured too. Your guests won’t be able to help but take these place cards home with them to serve as a lovely keepsake of your special day.
Personalised place cards at your wedding will add a sense of arrival and occasion as they gently guide your guests to their seats, helping them to feel at home all because of that personal touch - something that printed cards simply can’t do. Make sure that the bride and groom have their own place cards too.
When to order wedding place cards
Place cards may be small but they shouldn’t be overlooked. And because handmade takes that little bit longer - be assured that it’s worth it - just don’t leave them to the last minute to order.
Deciding what wedding day stationery you want at the same time as your invitation suite then all the decision-making work is done and your stationery will tie in effortlessly with the rest of the look and feel of your wedding. Then, once you have your RSVP’s it’s simply a case of letting your stationer or planner know the names.
Alternatively, those last-minute wedding name cards can be ordered off the shelf and with a range of paper and ink colours can be made to look bespoke.
What should be on place cards for weddings?
Place cards are used so that your guests can find their seats easily - and the celebrations can begin! A first name will do or you can use both names if you’re going for a formal wedding. Don’t forget that decorations can be added to each name card such as wax seals, pen and ink illustrations or painted edges.

Handmade Paper Place Cards
This pillowy-soft handmade paper is lovingly made in the UK - Yorkshire to be exact - using plant fibres and re-using materials from the clothing industry adding a sustainable element.
These luxury place cards are botanically dyed so that chemicals don’t spoil the environment. This light blue is one of my favourites but they come in a whole range of beautifully soft shades including soft pink and minty green.
Adding some metallic ink to their deckled edges brings out the unique character in each seating name card so you guests are treated to their very own miniature artwork.
Flat Place Cards
These flat calligraphy place cards have a classic yet clean look, making them suitable for traditional weddings with a modern edge. They’re unfussy in nature and unequivocally elegant.
Made from heavy-weight paper with a lightly textured surface, they’ll sit on the table without blowing away and come in a smooth texture and other colours.
For an extra personal touch these elegant place cards can be embellished with painted edges and there’s enough room for a wax seal too.
Vellum Place Cards
Muted and romantic, these vellum seating cards will add an understated and ethereal look to each guest’s setting at the table.
Simplicity is the idea here as they softly add layers of interest to your table decorations. They can have straight or torn edges and look best with metallic ink.
Calligraphy Gift Tag Place Cards
Gift tags aren’t just for favours but they serve as beautiful wedding place cards too. A personalised calligraphy message can be handwritten on the reverse, making a lovely keepsake for your guests.
Twine or ribbon made from recycled materials will add some texture and a pop of colour to make them stand out, or opt for vintage ribbon for something really special.
I always attach the twine or ribbon to your gift tags so they’re ready for using and admiring straight away.
Scroll Place Cards
For a truly opulent and luxurious look then opt for these calligraphy scroll place cards which can be finished with gold leaf.
They’ll add drama and dimension to any table setting as their curled edges and old-word charm steal the show.
Torn Paper Place Cards
These charming torn place cards can be presented as gift tags or be hole-free. Either way, they’ll add a deeply personal and unique feel to your table decor.
As with all of these place cards, the handwritten calligraphy which uses time-old materials, creates something that should be simple, but is actually quite special - and so deserving of your wedding.
Folded Place Cards
Stylish and fresh, you can’t go wrong with these simple tent-fold place cards available in every colour of the rainbow with paper made from ethical and sustainable sources.
Their sharp edges are beautifully complimented with soft calligraphy adding an essential personal touch to every place setting - and yes, you could even fit a wax seal or illustration on them too!
I hope you’re feeling inspired about how beautiful paper place cards can be, especially when they’re teamed with free-flowing calligraphy for that individual touch.
